Bringing Music Class Home

Last week we played Rhythm Twister in music class and students LOVED IT!!!  One student loved it so much that he went home and made his own rhythm twister board.   He brought it in to share with me.  I love his attention to detail in drawing the rhythm notes on the board.

I love when students take music class to places outside of the music room!

Rhythm Twister

When we learn rhythm notes we learn that each note has a name (ie: quarter note, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, half note) and a sound that it makes (ie: ta, ti ti, ti ki ti ki, ta-a).   Rhythm twister was a fun self-assessment activity to make sure students know the names of our rhythm notes.   We used this in several grades this week.   The student spinning was like the teacher and had to let someone know if they were “out” for choosing the wrong note to match its name.

I think the photos speak for themselves!

You never know what will happen…

I like to say that anything can happen in music class, well Wednesday proved exactly that!   When you see your students coming into your class balancing their recorder books on their head, what else can you do but make a game out of it!

One student led the class in copying steady beat movements.  The rest of the class had to copy the movements of the leader while balancing their recorder books on their head.  The last one to have their book on their head wins!    Creativity, movement, steady beat, and a lot of fun!

Lassiter High School Orchestra Visits Rocky Mount

Yesterday the Lassiter High School Orchestra under the direction of Carol Doemel and Koji Mori performed for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Rocky Mount.  They performed the National Anthem as well as several movie theme songs for the students.   The musicians taught the students about the instruments of the orchestra and even let them have a try at playing!  The musicians included 4 Rocky Mount alumni, which was very exciting!
